Education Trust

LEAP is actively looking to build the investment portfolio of the LEAP Education Trust by securing equity stakes in South African corporations looking to secure a “broad-based black economic empowerment partner.”

The LEAP Education Trust is a broad-based empowerment trust established in accordance with the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) Act 53 of 2003 and the Codes of Good Practice issued in terms of this Act. The trust has been verified as black owned and controlled by NERA.

The Trust participated in the Vodacom and SASOL empowerment transactions in 2008 and continues to look to take equity positions in businesses to provide a long term capital base from which to earn income to fund on-going school operations.

Objective of the Trust

The principal objective of the trust shall be to pay or apply any part or parts of the income and/or capital of the trust to or for the benefit of LEAP or any other beneficiary or beneficiaries of the trust, for use towards the education and upliftment of black South Africans.

Trustees

- Ngeniswa Felicia Nkwinti

- Anthony Russell Galloway

- Unathie Stofile

- Moses Vuyo Ngobeni

In working towards the fulfilment of this objective and for as long as LEAP shall qualify as a beneficiary of the trust, the trustees shall:

1. Facilitate the participation of the beneficiaries of LEAP in the benefits of economic empowerment within the context of the BBBEE Act.

2. Seek to work towards the financial sustainability of LEAP for the longer term in order to allow LEAP to continue its vision of providing mathematics- and science-focused secondary education to the learners of LEAP so as to enable them to gain access to tertiary education, to increase their chances of success within their chosen professions and to develop as socially responsible citizens of South Africa.

3. Take cognisance of LEAP’s own principal means of capitalisation, namely through donations and fund-raising, and shall use their discretion so as to complement the efforts of LEAP and to avoid conflicts between the trust and LEAP, as far as is possible, in this regard.

4. Do all such things as they shall from time to time deem necessary.

In the event that LEAP at any time shall not qualify as a beneficiary of the trust, then the trustees shall facilitate the participation of the beneficiaries of those organisations or institutions that do qualify as beneficiaries of the trust, in the benefits of economic empowerment, and shall work towards the financial sustainability of such organisations or institutions.
