LEAP has a number of exciting opportunities available for individuals and companies to get involved and become a part of LEAP’s success. These include sponsoring bursaries and scholarships, planned giving, volunteering, corporate social investment initiatives and BEE partnerships. Activity Specific Funding Opportunities Learner Bursaries: R35,000 per learner per year Full tuition bursaries for LEAP learners cover the costs of text books, inclusion in the school feeding scheme, transport to and from school and involvement in the holiday programmes. LEAP Learner Support Fund: R500 per learner per month Many of our learners have ongoing economic challenges and we try as a school to identify children whose economic circumstances are so extreme that they need financial support for the very basic needs of their existence. LEAPSA Graduate Fund: R500 per student per year LEAP Science and Maths School aims to ensure that all our matriculants access bursaries and scholarships to assist them in funding their tertiary studies. However, this is not always possible or the amount allocated by the awarding organisation only covers tuition costs. Many of our learners come from single parent families or homes were both parents have deceased, there is therefore enormous need and pressure for learners to contribute to the family’s income once they have matriculated. As our learners come from such economically disadvantaged backgrounds, it is essential that they receive funding to subsidise their living expenses if they are to be successful in their tertiary studies. LEAP has therefore established this fund for LEAP graduates that pursue tertiary studies who are in extreme financial need. The bursaries are used for tertiary course registration fees, textbooks, personal needs and exceptional needs that cannot be bought using the existing National Student Funding. Teacher Training : R40,000 per trainee teacher per year Teacher training scholarships fund teachers enrolled in the LEAP Teacher Training Programme. The students pursue their Bachelor of Education degree through the University of South Africa while interning at LEAP Science and Maths Schools. The scholarships cover the costs of a student’s UNISA course fees, text books and monthly stipends as well as contribute to the costs of the dedicated mentoring and specialised tuition that they receive. Outdoor Camps: R30,000 per camp LEAP runs 11 Maths and Science focused weekend camps for 60 to 80 grade 7, 8 and 9 learners from our township feeder schools every year. Existing LEAP learners and trainee teachers play an active leadership and facilitation role in these camps so as to develop their leadership skills and enable a powerful form of peer mentoring to take place. Safe House: R1,500 per month per child The creation of a Safe House in Cape Town is an ongoing expense as we place LEAP learners that are at risk in the safety of a home in order to enable them to grow strong and to develop within the emotional safety of a real home. It costs us R1,500 per month per child and we would welcome direct support of this initiative. We are hoping to establish similar opportunities in all schools founded as LEAP schools. Learning Centre : R1,100,000 per year The primary aims of The Learning Centre are to improve Grade 7 and 8 learners’ understanding and competency in Maths, to share resources with community-based teachers and to provide tutoring support to high school learners in our partner communities. LEAP Transport: 2 passenger cars needed We are looking for a passenger car for each of our schools to enable the movements that are required within a school community such as ours. Capital Project: R10,000,000 to purchase, renovate and equip school property and buildings LEAP is seeking to purchase and renovate a property in Linbro Park, Johannesburg, to provide a long term home for LEAP 3 (Alexandra) and provide capacity for a second school on the same campus.
Planned Giving You can make a significant, long term impact in the lives of our learners by supporting LEAP Science and Maths School through planned giving. Planning giving opportunities include: - a bequest made through your Will - naming LEAP Science and Maths School as a beneficiary in your life insurance policy - a gift of real estate
Planned giving not only offers you a way to make a real, long term impact in the lives of South African’s youth, but also enables you to establish a lasting legacy either for yourself or in memory of a loved one. How about establishing a scholarship in your family name? R350,000 funds one learner per year in perpetuity and R400,000 funds a teacher’s training for one year in perpetuity, thereby ensuring that your legacy continues for many generations to come. As each individual’s circumstances vary, we recommend that you speak to your lawyer, accountant or financial adviser when drafting your Will. If you do decide to leave LEAP Science and Maths School a gift through planned giving, we would like to encourage you to tell us so that we have the opportunity to thank you for your generosity and can invite you to be included our school activities. Investment Opportunities LEAP is actively looking to build the investment portfolio of the LEAP Education Trust by securing equity stakes in South African corporations looking to secure a “broad-based black economic empowerment partner.” The LEAP Endowment Fund has been established with the aim of utilising income generated from the fund to cover school operating expenses. |
